Wisdom of the World Media Alert

Chicago Healthcare Gets Dose of Spirituality At Wellness Place, Caregivers Learn Innovative Methods to Comfort, Heal

There is no question that the United States is home to the most advanced medical facilities in the world. But groundbreaking medical treatments and a steady stream of new drugs into the marketplace has healthcare practitioners wholly focused on the quantity of life and not the quality - a perspective which Emmy-award winning composer Gary Remal Malkin and pioneer song healer Michael Stillwater-Korns are shifting with their book and CD set Graceful Passages from New World Library.

Graceful Passages, which combines original film score-quality music with spoken word recordings of humanitarian leaders such as Elisabeth Kubler Ross, Ram Dass, and Rabbi Zalman Shacter-Shelomi, has convinced tens of thousands that audio tools can be a powerful means of bringing greater compassion to the healthcare industry. In fact, health care professionals have reported that Graceful Passages is one of the most significant contributions to the field of 'non-pharmacological interventions' for the alleviation of fears associated with illness and end of life.

Graceful Passages will be introduced to Chicago-area healthcare practitioners the week of September 20th through a series of experiential workshops entitled “Care for the Journey: Sustaining the Heart of Healthcare”, and will be presented by the educational non-profit, Companion Arts. Led by Malkin, Stillwater-Korns, and Companion Arts’ Executive Director Mary Matthiesen, “Care for the Journey” offers Chicago-area healthcare professionals an opportunity to add methods of the mind/body/spirit approach to their care-giving, to deepen and sustain the emotional and spiritual dimensions of their work. The Wellness Place in Palatine is hosting the “Care for the Journey” workshops along with a public forum/conversation held on September 22nd where Stillwater-Korns, Matthiesen and Malkin will lead the public in a conversation about the importance of investigating one’s own mortality. Additionally, “Care for the Journey” workshops will conclude with the Medicine Music Concert, showcasing the music of Stillwater-Korns and Malkin. The concert is open to the public and will take place at the Wellness Center in Palatine on Friday, September 24th at 7:00 p.m. For all events, pre-registration is REQUIRED by calling Wellness Place, 847-221-2400.

“Care for the Journey” workshops are further proof of the growing movement to infuse healthcare with multi-faith spirituality. The kind of spirituality that Dr. Christina Puchalski of the George Washington Institute for Spirituality and Healing in D.C. champions, the kind that is promoted in Harvard’s Spirituality and Healing Conferences three times a year, the kind of spirituality that is supported by research grants funded nationally by organizations such as the Templeton and Fetzer Foundations.
