National Hospice Conference Features
Gound Breaking “Audio Medicine” Program.
Scaling the Peaks of Excellence in Hospice and Palliative Care.
Adams Mark Hotel, Denver, CO, April 10-14, 2003: Wisdom of the
World, Inc. founders Michael Stillwater and Gary Malkin were the
featured presenters along with Jean
Ledoux, chaplain of Hospice of the Florida Suncoast, at a national
Hospice conference in Denver, where attendees had first-hand
experience of a breakthrough program to support emotional healing
for patients, families, and staff. This “audio medicine,” entitled
Graceful Passages, and the revolutionary program for its use
in healthcare, Grace In Practice, are now being utilized by the
largest hospice organization in the U.S—The Hospice of
the Florida Suncoast—with remarkable results. Chaplain
Jean Ledoux explains that the results are compelling: “Barriers
to communication simply fall away, allowing for expression and
closure to occur between loved ones when time is precious.” Ledoux,
along with many other chaplains, social workers, psychologists,
and clinical professionals throughout the country, praises the
significant benefits from the contributions of Wisdom of the
World, Inc.. Ledoux points to repeated experiences f profound
closure for families when other efforts to offer solace fail: “Graceful
Passages takes on a life of its own. It melts away anxiety, and
completely transforms each person in the room to a calm and peaceful
state.”
Wisdom of the World, Inc., a non-profit service organization,
offers trainings and audio resources to support the healthcare
professional. Staff retention
in healthcare continues to be of critical concern for all Americans, both socially
and economically. Staff shortages and burnout are common among caregivers,
whose jobs can be emotionally draining, as they relate each day to the anguish
and despair of patients at the end stages of life. Spiritual educator and Wisdom
of the World, Inc. founder Stillwater points to an underlying issue: “Fear
of our own mortality and accumulated, unexpressed grief reduce our ability
to be present with ourselves and each other. Facing our feelings with compassion
greatly benefits both us and our relationships with peers and patients.”
Authors Stillwater and Malkin also conducted a book signing on April 10th at
12:15pm in the conference “Marketplace” On-site Bookstore. That
evening, Emmy Award-winning composer/performer Malkin teamed with therapeutic
artist/performer Stillwater to demonstrate how innovative healing music uplifts
the human spirit in a “Grace In Practice” concert held at 7:30pm.
This event was held for conference attendees, as well as for the general public
and was a benefit for Metro-Denver Coalition for End of Life Care. $10 donations
were accepted.
