Unique Vigil at Washington National Cathedral Commemorates 9-11 “Voices
from 9-11: A Gathering of Faith Hope and Love,” produced by award-winning composer Gary Malkin, blends first-hand accounts
with original music, creating a tribute of songs, readings and reflection – performed
by musicians, actors, clergy, and everyday heroes
On Wednesday, September.
11, 2002 at 8 p.m. EDT, Washington National Cathedral in Washington,
D.C. welcomes the public to participate in "Voices from
9-11: A Gathering of Faith, Hope and Love," an interfaith tribute to
the power of service on the anniversary of 9-11. Emmy-award winning composer
Gary Malkin was chosen to help produce the event, having just released “Graceful
Passages, a Companion for Living and Dying,” a CD-book acclaimed for
its collection of spoken-words of prominent spiritual leaders, and film-score
quality music, brought together to offer comfort as we face our mortality.
His treatment of the subject of loss, which ultimately uplifts and inspires,
is the very quality the National Cathedral wanted for “Voices from
9-11.”
Malkin is working closely with co-creators The Reverend Canon Peter Grandell
of the National Cathedral, and Courtney Cowart, Thd., a New York theologian;
both of whom were at Ground Zero on the day of the attack. Canon Grandell,
the Cathedral’s Precentor, plans and conducts more than 1,800 services
a year at the National Cathedral, and Dr. Cowart helped build a respite ministry,
which provided 24/7 counseling and meals to rescue workers, at the St. Paul’s
Chapel in New York City. Her experience led her to interview others serving
in similar capacities in New York and Washington, producing testimonies that
are the backbone of "Voices from 9-11."
Speakers who were involved early on in the recovery efforts will read these
special testimonies. Young volunteers, clergy, and doctors share their
stories, as do other civilians called to volunteer, highlighting how ordinary
people
were transformed by performing extraordinary acts of altruism. Some accounts
describe what it felt like to be cheered as heroes for the first time in
their lives as they emerged from forty-eight hour shifts in the Red Zone.
Readings
will be set to original music by Malkin and songwriters Beth Neilsen Chapman
and David Wilcox, alongside performances by improvisational soloists
Joey Blake of Sovoso, Rachel Bagby, cellist Jamie Seber, and many others
performers coming from around the country to volunteer their music. Excerpts
from Graceful
Passages will be woven into the evening’s program, including a selection
featuring Nobel-nominated Vietnamese Buddhist Thich Nhat Hanh.
